As a result, market players are increasingly refreshing the Juice market, with various innovations that offer consumers healthy and sustainable options, whilst providing the same quality of taste. This includes offering brand new product ranges, as well as adapting existing production processes, to better meet this demand within the industry.

In terms of the South African market, the local Juice market achieved growth of 3.4% year-on-year, in current prices, between 2020 and 2021. This growth is partially due to the increase in mindful consumption within the Juice market, in terms of both personal health and the environment, which has accelerated innovation in the industry.

In terms of mindful consumption for personal health reasons, within the global Juice market, consumers are prioritising low-sugar, functional, and organic Juice products, as health consciousness rises worldwide. This focus on mindful consumption has sparked innovation in the Juice market, in efforts to appeal to shifting consumer demands. For example, global industry player, Better Juice, has developed an enzymatic sugar-reduction process that bio-converts sugars in fruit Juice into non-digestible dietary fibres, without impacting the taste or the nutritional profile of the Juice.

This trend is further demonstrated in the South African Juice market, with the launch of several new healthy Juice products, in line with increased focus on active nutrition, as well as organic and functional products. For example, Sir Fruit launched a new Probiotic Cranberry Shot that contains the GanedenBC30 probiotic, which is regarded as a well-researched and stable probiotic that provides the body with good bacteria. In addition, PURA’s new PURA Kids range is naturally flavour-infused, non-carbonated, and low in sugar, offering a healthy beverage alternative for children and contains only thirty-four calories per 200ml serving.

However, this theme of mindful consumption goes beyond personal health motivations, and also translates to sustainability within the Juice market. More specifically, consumers around the world are showing preference for Juice brands that contribute towards sustainability, resulting in innovations amongst global industry players that are making the Juice market greener.

As an example, one of the world’s most sustainable Juice and smoothie factories, The Blender, has opened in Rotterdam, in the Netherlands. Interestingly, this factory is carbon dioxide (CO2) neutral, and fully electric. Additionally, SIG, a Swiss aseptic packaging company, has developed the first-ever aluminium-free and 100% recyclable carton, with full-barrier protection for oxygen-sensitive products, such as fruit Juice.

This trend has also squeezed into the South African Juice market, demonstrated by Ceres’ transition to eco-friendly paper straws, for products such as the Ceres 200ml Juice packs. In addition, the new PURA Kids Juice range is available in environmentally-friendly Juice cartons, and is accompanied by paper straws. These launches further demonstrate innovation towards sustainability in the local Juice market, in efforts to appeal to the mindful consumer.
