In South Africa, the Allergy Care market increased by a compound annual growth rate of 7.4%, at constant prices, between 2014 and 2018 and is forecast to grow at a slightly slower rate of 6.1% between 2020 and 2024. Growth in this market has mainly been driven by the Antihistamine segment which achieved a CAGR of 8.9% between 2014 and 2019.
Consumers today are more prone than ever to suffer from some form of allergy, including seasonal allergies and food allergies. Furthermore, seasonal allergies are being heightened by global warming and climatic changes, while new causes and triggers for food allergies are continuously identified. As a result of this, the local Allergy Care Market is expected to benefit from the increasing prevalence of allergies in South Africa over the next couple of years.
According to Doctor Thulja Trikamjee, a specialist paediatrician and allergologist from Netcare Sunninghill Hospital in Johannesburg, South Africa has experienced a dramatic rise in allergic diseases, so much so that South Africa is experiencing an ‘allergy epidemic’.
Wilmi Hudsonberg, the spokesperson for Pharma Dynamics, stated that South Africa currently has one of the highest prevalence rates of allergic conditions in developing countries, catching up to developed countries such as Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and the United States. For example, allergic rhinitis (hayfever), which is the most commonly reported allergy, affects up to 16 million people in South Africa.
Furthermore, statistics has shown that allergies among disadvantaged communities in South Africa are also rapidly increasing. Hudsonberg explained that most South Africans are not fortunate enough to access Allergy Care at all and have to wait for months to see a specialist. The imbalance between the demand for specialist Allergy Care and growing supply of allergy sufferers is ensuring strong growth in over-the-counter Allergy Care product sales.
