In South Africa, the Allergy Care market increased by a CAGR of 7.5%, at constant prices, between 2014 and 2019 and is forecast to increase at a CAGR of 6.1% until 2024.

When considering the local and global Allergy Care markets, increasing rates of pollution, as well as the related problem of climate change, are both having a significant impact on the incidence and severity of allergies amongst consumers. This is resulting in increased demand for Allergy Care products, as more consumers seek symptomatic allergy relief, particularly due to extended pollen seasons locally and globally.

Several innovations and technology have emerged within the global Allergy Care market to make Allergy Care more convenient, affordable, safe and accessible. Mobile applications, like Web MD, is a top-rated application which incorporates information regarding a variety of allergies such as pollen, food allergies, skin allergies, insect allergies, and medicine allergies.

The use of AI and machine learning is also expected to assist allergic asthma care, on both investigative and clinical levels, with the potential to predict asthma exacerbations before they occur.

Within the South African context particularly, the introduction of several innovations and technologies is reducing the impact of challenges being experienced, such as regulatory hurdles and lowered consumer spending power.

One of these is the ZiBi Pen, by Impulse Biomedical, which is an affordable and effective adrenaline autoinjector that can be used multiple times. Currently, in its second phase of development, the South African product is expected to offer an alternative to consumers with severe allergic reactions that cause anaphylactic shock, at a fraction of the price of EpiPen.

Similarly to global trends, there are a plethora of local online applications and tests for allergy sufferers, such as AllergyCheck and Allergy Test. Furthermore, Nexa Allershield Junior, released by Pharma Dynamics, represents the first local non-drowsy treatment for allergic rhinitis in children. Having no side-effects, the product extends the accessibility of anti-allergy medication to children over 18 years old in a convenient powdered nose spray format.

In addition, ‘The Real Pollen Count’ campaign has been launched, in order to raise awareness regarding the effects of pollen on allergies. As part of the project, monitoring systems (or spore traps) are placed on rooftops, with pollen levels being recorded on a weekly basis. The data collated  and reported provides consumers with a decision-making tool, based on the level of pollen that is present in their respective regions.
