Research Insights Help Successful Launch of Hypertension Treatment

Insight Survey partnered with a multinational pharmaceutical company to evaluate the market potential in South Africa and assist in developing a marketing launch strategy for a new hypertension single pill combination therapy.

Business Challenge

The client, a multinational pharmaceutical company sought to introduce a new single-pill combination therapy for hypertension in South Africa. However, there was limited insight into general practitioners’ (GPs) prescribing behaviour, treatment preferences, and the influence of patient demographics on treatment decisions. Understanding these elements was critical for market positioning, messaging, and adoption of the new product.

Research Methodology

The research was conducted in two phases:

Phase 1 – Focus groups were held with GPs from both developed and emerging market profiles across South Africa. Discussions focused on guideline awareness, prescribing habits, and receptiveness to fixed-dose combination therapies, along with feedback on marketing concepts.

Phase 2 – A structured telephone survey was completed with GPs. The survey measured prescribing patterns for different demographic profiles, treatment preferences for monotherapy and dual therapy, and reactions to the proposed Indapamide SR + Amlodipine combination.

Impact

The research provided the client with a nuanced understanding of hypertension treatment approaches in South Africa. It highlighted strong interest in simplified, cost-effective therapies – especially among GPs in emerging areas – and underscored the importance of reimbursement and education in driving adoption. These findings informed product messaging, launch strategy, and positioning for the new single-pill combination therapy.

Medical Rep effectiveness among GPs & Specialists

Business Challenge

  • We were approached by one of the world’s leading pharmaceutical companies to revise and refine their ongoing tracking study to understand how effective their medical reps had been in communicating about key products.
  • Reps in any organisation represent a significant cost and they are competing against reps from competitor companies on a daily basis. It is therefore crucial that they are highly effective, undergo relevant training, and that the ROI is maximised through continuous feedback.

Research Methodology

  • We conducted telephonic surveys among General Practitioners, Cardiologists, Psychiatrists, and Specialists in order to evaluate product recall and key messages recall. Our experienced research team was able to conduct the interviews swiftly, effectively, and intelligently based on upfront research and detailed briefing.

Impact

Based on the findings, the client was able to evaluate the effectiveness of their reps across product and region, as well as on an individual level. This allowed them to provide focused training for reps in order to improve communication effectiveness with Medical Practitioners.
