Are new pain product formats providing relief to SA’s Analgesics Market?

Within the global and local Analgesics markets, industry players are expanding product lines and offering new formats of popular Analgesic products to meet consumer demands for safer, more effective, and convenient pain-relief solutions. Over the past year, there has been a growing trend towards non-traditional formats, such as sprays, sticks, sachets, balms, and innovative capsules, amongst others, thereby helping to drive demand in the Analgesics market.

Insight Survey’s latest South African Analgesics Industry Landscape Report 2022 carefully uncovers the Global and South African Analgesics Market, based on the latest intelligence and research. It describes the latest global and local market trends, innovation and technology, drivers, and challenges, to present an objective insight into the South African Analgesics market environment and its future.

In 2022, the global Analgesics market is expected to generate revenue of approximately US$30.9 billion. Furthermore, the global Analgesics market is forecast to increase at a robust compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.6%, to reach approximately US$42.5 billion by 2027, as illustrated in the graph below.

In terms of the South African market, the local Analgesics market achieved strong growth of 8.8% year-on-year, at current prices, between 2020 and 2021. Moreover, the market is expected to continue to experience solid growth, with a CAGR of 6.9% over the 2022* to 2026* forecast period.

This growth in both the global and local Analgesics markets can be attributed, in part, to the product line expansion being experienced in the industry, specifically in terms of offering new and innovative formats of Analgesic products that cater to growing consumer demands for effectiveness and convenience.

For example, the preference for topical Analgesic products is rising in the global market, relative to other formats, particularly due to the availability, safety, and effectiveness of this product format. In addition, global players are also introducing Analgesic products in other non-traditional formats, such as CV Sciences Inc.’s new unique +PlusCBD™ Pain Relief Sport Recovery Stick, which is part of its topicals range offering a convenient, on-the-go, pain relief option.

Other notable new formats of Analgesic products entering the global market include Barker Wellness’ new Pain Relief Balm, Hempu Time’s new CBD pain-relieving spray, and Jenburkt Wellness’ Zixa Strong high performing pain-relief spray range, which utilises a non-greasy, quick-absorption mechanism. Moreover, Virpax recently completed all FDA required pre-clinical studies for Epoladerm, its pre-filled Analgesic spray, which acts as a more effective and easier-to-use treatment for pain associated with osteoarthritis of the knee.

This focus on new formats has also made a painless transition into the South African market, with leading local brands introducing new formats of popular Analgesic products. These new formats are also capitalising on the recent local trend of fast-acting Analgesics, that provide quick relief from pain and, therefore, allow pain-sufferers to continue with their busy lives.

As an example, Nurofen® South Africa, recently announced the introduction of a new format of its Nurofen® Express product, which now comes in a liquid capsule. This new liquid capsule has been formulated with a thin seam innovation and is claimed to work twice as fast as standard ibuprofen, for fast relief from pain caused by headaches.

Furthermore, earlier this year, Grand-Pa® South Africa, launched a new stick pack format of its popular Analgesic headache powder. The product is still available as a powder, but now has a new ‘Shake it, break it, take it and go’ stick pack design, which offers consumers the same quality and quantity of the pain-relief solution, within a new easy-to-use format.

This focus on format innovation has also made its way into the Paediatric Analgesics category, with Panado® South Africa introducing a new format of its well-known and trusted Panado® Paediatric Syrup. More specifically, Panado® launched a new 5ml sachet of the original syrup, for consumers to use on-the-go. With this launch, the company focused on the convenient and easy-to-use nature of
this product, reflected in its tagline ‘Be ready for pain + fever, anytime, anywhere’.
