Growth in both the global and South African Sports Nutrition markets can be partly attributed to the introduction of a range and variety of on-the-go formats, including ready-to-drink beverages, gels, and bars. For example, in partnership with WK Kellogg Co., Six Star Pro Nutrition®, one of America’s top-selling Sports Nutrition brands launched a new whey RTD protein product in Kellogg’s Froot Loops® cereal flavour. This on-the-go protein shake is designed to be a nostalgic, tasty, and convenient product for athletes, fitness enthusiasts, and anyone aiming to boost their protein intake and make their diet more enjoyable.
PERFECT Sports® also recently launched its DIESEL® protein bars, formulated to offer consumers a combination of unique taste and convenience, with premium-quality ingredients. At the same time, Shastowitz, the consumer goods distribution company, entered the field of Sports Nutrition with the launch of an innovative protein bar featuring a unique 1:10 protein-to-calorie ratio (high protein, low calories) suitable for both men and women, indicated to be ideal for post-workout recovery or as a healthy anytime snack.
Similarly, the South African market is also experiencing a surge of innovative, convenience-focused Sports Nutrition products. For example, 32Gi® Sport Nutrition announced the launch of two new running-focused products including its Race Pro 300 Calories – Super Carb/Protein Energy Gel, which is a new energy gel product designed to provide a high-calorie boost, containing a special blend of carbohydrates and protein for sustained energy during exercise. Additionally, the brand’s Race Pro Energy Bar contains a special blend of nutrients for long-lasting energy, and has a delicious, unique nougat taste, as well as being a source of protein and healthy unsaturated fat.
In terms of alternative formats, Biogen announced the launch of its innovative Energy Chews Electrolyte Jellies product, which is a chewable supplement and designed to help maintain hydration during exercise without needing to drink additional fluid. NutriTech also launched its Nuke Energy Effervescent, a convenient energy and focus drink mix, that contains B vitamins for energy support.
In terms of sachets, Nutritional Performance Labs (NPL) expanded its Halo Collective range with new single-serve sachet products for its Blackout pre-workout and Halo Pro whey protein products, aimed at complementing an active, busy lifestyle, while prioritising convenience. USN also launched its Qhush Platinum Black pre-workout range, available in on-the-go convenience sachets, indicated to increase energy and muscle pumps, while maintaining ultimate concentration levels.
NPL also brought back its Nitro Rush product to the local market, an ultra-concentrated pre-workout liquid, which is now available in convenient sachets and is indicated to be ‘quick and easy’ to consume, with no water needed.
Finally, Primal Sports Nutrition announced the launch of its new Protein Chips. This innovative on-the-go snack was designed to be convenient and satisfying, combining the taste and texture of regular crisps, with the added benefit of high protein content. The product is offered in both sweet and savoury flavours, namely Salt and Vinegar, Sour Cream, Salted Caramel, and Cinnamon Treat.
