In terms of South Africa, the local Carbonated Soft Drinks market achieved a strong growth of 8.0% year-on-year, at current prices, between 2022 and 2023. Furthermore, the market is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.5% over the 2024 to 2028 forecast period. Interestingly, Off-Trade consumption is expected to grow at a stronger rate over this period, with a CAGR of 6.7%, compared to 6.2% for On-Trade consumption.

The current and expected growth of both the global and local Carbonated Soft Drinks market is partly being driven by increased innovation in the industry, with limited-edition CSD flavours and exclusive packaging taking centre stage. For example, in the global market, Candy Can, a Canadian zero-sugar CSD brand, announced the launch of its newest limited-edition flavour, Banana Candy, inspired by the latest ‘Despicable Me’ movie release.

Furthermore, Pepsi introduced two new limited-edition flavours, Pepsi Lime and Pepsi Peach, to its Cola range in the United States, while Dr Pepper launched a limited-edition spicy flavour, called Dr Pepper ‘Hot Take’. In terms of packaging, The Coca-Cola Company recently trialled new limited-edition Sprite and Sprite Zero bottles in the United Kingdom, with label-less bottles that instead feature an embossed logo and laser-engraved product information. São Geraldo, a Brazilian cashew CSD brand, also launched a limited-edition series of aluminium cans for its product.

This trend has also gained traction in the local market, with South African market players focusing on innovation with limited-edition CSDs. As an example of this, Coca-Cola announced the launch of its new Coca‑Cola® Wozzaah, a limited-edition soft drink inspired by the vibrant and dynamic spirit of African culture.

The company also introduced its new ‘Y3000 Zero Sugar’ drink, which was co-created with human and artificial intelligence (AI) to reflect how consumers envision the future through emotions, aspirations, colours, and flavours. This product was launched in select markets globally, including South Africa.

In addition, as part of its ‘#WhatTheFanta’ global campaign, Fanta recently launched its limited-edition apple pie flavour CSD product in South Africa. The new zero-sugar, dessert-themed flavour was indicated to embody the company’s vibrant spirit, in its efforts to create a wave of excitement in the market.

Local player, JIVE, also announced the launch of its new limited-edition JIVE Funny Flavoured CSD product, which was launched in conjunction with the 25th annual ‘JIVE Cape Town Funny Festival’. In order to create excitement around the new flavour, the company launched a competition for those who purchase the product to win tickets to the festival, with various activations in malls throughout the Western Cape to promote this competition and new flavour.
