Both globally and locally, the Juice market is witnessing a shift in consumer preferences from traditional high sugar Juices to healthier variations that have more nutritional benefits, driven by ongoing health concerns. This is resulting in market players increasing its existing product ranges or launching new Juice products that are sugar-free, or reduced sugar, thus meeting the ever-changing needs of consumers and catering to ongoing global health trends and priorities.
Insight Survey’s latest South African Juice Industry Landscape Report 2024 carefully uncovers the global and local Juice market, based on the latest intelligence and research. It describes the latest global and local market trends, innovation and technology, drivers, and challenges, to present an objective insight into the South African Juice industry environment and its future.
In 2024, the global Juice market is estimated to generate revenue of approximately US$123.7 billion. Furthermore, as per the graph below, the global Juice market is forecast to increase by a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.1% between 2024 and 2028, to reach approximately US US$150.8 billion by 2028.
In terms of South Africa, the local Juice market achieved strong growth of 7.3% year-on-year, at current prices, between 2023 and 2023. Tellingly, the market is forecast to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.4% at current prices, between 2024 and 2028.
The current and expected growth of both the global and local Juice market can be attributed, in part, to the introduction of healthier Juice products, specifically those lower in, or without, sugar and those that have additional nutritional benefits. These new products and formulations are being released by market players to meet prominent consumer health trends and concerns.
For example, in the global market, in line with the recent trend towards healthier Juice products and variations, Tropicana introduced two new Juice ranges to its Ambient portfolio in the United Kingdom (UK), namely Tropicana Rise & Shine and Tropicana Fruit Sensation, each containing various flavours. Specifically, the Tropicana Rise & Shine range was introduced to address concerns among consumers regarding sugar content, offering 30% less sugar than typical Juices.
Furthermore, Welch recently introduced a line of zero-sugar Juice products, following increased consumer demand for zero-sugar variants that do not compromise on flavour. According to the company, this line is a game-changer for consumers who are mindful about their sugar consumption. The new range includes passion fruit and grape Juices, as well as tropical punch, strawberry, and concord grape Juices.
This trend has also gained traction in the local market, with more South African brands introducing Juices lower in, or without, sugar and those that have additional healthy benefits. Notably, the introduction of healthier Juices has been identified as a key driving force for sales in the local Juice market, as consumers increasingly prioritise health concerns.
As an example of this, Clover SA’s Tropika brand expanded its Juice product line by introducing the Tropika Zero range, offering the same smooth taste as the original but without any added sugar. The new range includes three flavours, namely Orange Flavoured Dairy Fruit Mix Juice, Pineapple flavoured Dairy Fruit Mix Juice, and Mango & Peach Flavoured Dairy Fruit Mix Juice.
In addition, South African Juice brand, Bliss Juicery, recently launched its new Green Juice product, which features several health ingredients, such as kale, spinach, parsley, cucumber, celery, and lemon. This product was promoted as a healthy ‘cleanse’ Juice, formulated to aid in the health of the digestive system, as well as deliver essential nutrients.
Furthermore, Sir Fruit, a well-known South African Juice brand, launched a new range of cold-pressed Juice shots called ‘Power Upz,’ designed for children aged 4 and up. This line includes three variants, each packed with 100% pure fruit and vegetables, offering specific health benefits such as improved immunity, energy, and gut health. The flavours feature fun, vibrant mascots to engage kids, while providing key nutrients like probiotics, vitamins C, D, and B, and zinc to support their overall health and vitality.
